Like all craftspeople, a dyer/spinner uses various tools. Here are some of mine:
For Spinning:
My
Lendrum double-treadle wheel. It serves all my purposes so far,
being able to spin super-bulky and novelty yarns, as well as more
"reasonable" weights, and even lace-fine cashmere.
Drum Carder
Before spinning, the fiber must be prepared.
I often use prepared rovings,
especially when dyeing before spinning, but for blending fibers and colors,
a good drum carder can't be beat. I studied all the available carders,
and decided to buy what most people recommended as the best - a Patrick Green
carder,
to which I added a PG electric motor and a Duncan drum brush.
Crockpot
A crockpot? Sure! Easiest way to
get great color combos
in small batches. This is where you get to experiment with
a minimum of hands-on work. The colors work like magic,
especially when rainbow dyeing. For a demonstration of how it works
and what you can expect to get, go to the
Crockpot Demo.
